IVDD & SPINAL SURGERY RECOVERY

IVDD turned your world upside down. Recovery doesn't have to keep them locked away.

Intervertebral Disc Disease strikes fast - often Dachshunds, French Bulldogs, Corgis and Beagles - and the prescription is almost always the same: 4-8 weeks of strict crate rest. A medidog pram is the kindest way to keep your dog safely confined and still part of the family.

4-8 weeks

typical strict confinement after IVDD surgery or conservative treatment

What "strict crate rest" really means after IVDD

No walking, no jumping, no stairs

Disc material has compressed the spinal cord. Every uncontrolled movement risks re-injury during healing - your vet will limit your dog to toilet breaks only.

But isolation slows everything down

Dogs confined alone in back-room, laundry crates can become anxious, vocal and restless - which means more movement, not less. Recovery works best when your dog stays calm and close to you.

A pram is confinement on wheels

Fully enclosed, padded and zipped, a medidog pram meets your vet's confinement requirements while letting your dog nap beside your, come to check-ups, and feel sun on their nose.

What recovery typically looks like

General guide only - always follow your own vet's aftercare plan. Medidog provides recovery equipment not veterinary advice.

1

Weeks I-II

Crate or pram rest only. Toilet breaks on a sling or harness. Pram trips = enrichment without a single step taken.

2

Weeks III-IV

Vet re-checks. Short, controlled standing may begin. The pram does all the travel to hydrotherapy and physio.

3

Weeks V-VIII

Gradual, supervised return to short lead walks - with the pram on standby for tired legs and longer outings.

The right pram for this recovery

Most IVDD breeds (Dachshunds, Frenchies, Corgis, Cavaliers, Beagles) fit the piccolo pram - up to 30kg, from $70. Free delivery to Perth metro vet clinics, cleaning included, extend anytime.

From a family who's been there

It happened so suddenly. Within 2 weeks he had [IVDD] surgery and was home for recovery with not being able to walk. I had no time to plan and organise much, which made being able to loan the Ibijaja pet jogger/ pram from Francine was an absolute godsend!

Questions families ask us

  • Yes - conservative management relies even more strict crate rest, typically 6-8 weeks. A pram makes that long stretch sustainable for both of you.

  • Many do! The cabin is padded and enclosed, so dogs like Axel slept safely beside their owners' bed at night instead of alone in another room.

  • Extend any time from your confirmation email - IVDD timelines often shift after re-checks, and we've built the service around that.
